Rachel

Rachel volunteers in Henry's Café 3 days a week and has been with us since October 2023.

She is a Volunteer Rep and helps at events, sharing ideas and being fully involved in the community.

My Story

How did you get involved with the charity?

I came to speak to Jessie and asked if I could volunteer. I came in to use the community fridge. I have been here since October 2023.

What do you do?

I am a catering assistant volunteer – I volunteer in the café and help Nicola with cooking, taking orders, cleaning tables, greeting customers. I also volunteer at events and attend meetings and help where I can. I help at Quiz nights and go to Wellness Wednesdays.

Proudest moment

My proudest moment was being asked to be a Volunteer Rep. This means I volunteer team leader and offer peer support to other volunteers, particularly if they have questions or there is an issue affecting them.

How has volunteering impact you?

It has got me out of my shell and given me experience back in the trade again. I have made friends and gained confidence. I have a better sense of community and I enjoy it. It gives me a sense of wellbeing and an incentive to get out of bed in the morning to do something.

Look to the future

I would like employment if a job became available. I would like more events and to be involved in them. I would like WHCE to be busier and for more people to come. I would like to be involved in more decision making in events to develop my skills in that area. I would like to carry on attending training.
